Associate Vice President for Medical School Development and Alumni Affairs Yale University School of Medicine | New Haven, Connecticut Yale School of Medicine (YSM) seeks a seasoned, collaborative, and results-driven fundraising leader to serve as the associate vice president (AVP) for medical school development and alumni affairs. Reporting jointly to the dean of the medical school and Yale University’s vice president for alumni affairs and development, the AVP will lead fundraising and alumni relations for one of the most distinguished medical schools in the country, with highly developed research, teaching, and clinical care. This leader will join the institution at an exciting time as Yale continues its For Humanity campaign—its most ambitious fundraising effort to date, guided by a mission to improve the world now and for future generations.YSM is one of the world’s leading centers for biomedical research, advanced clinical care, and medical education. Its standing rests on its impressive history of attracting top tier scientists in both basic science and clinical departments, a prized medical education system that prioritizes self-directed learning, and a close partnership with the Yale New Haven Health System for clinical care. YSM currently ranks seventh among medical schools receiving funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and tenth for number of grants per faculty member. More than 1,600 Yale physicians provide care to patients from across the region and around the world.The AVP will provide collaborative leadership and strategic vision to maximize the philanthropic potential of YSM’s development operation. The AVP will lead a 30-person staff that raised $179 million in Fiscal Year 2023, representing approximately 28 percent of annual funds raised by Yale University. Focusing on both current initiatives and positioning YSM appropriately for the long-term, the AVP will develop innovative strategies for personally cultivating and soliciting new prospects as well as strengthening relationships with existing donors. : Establishing strong and effective working relationships with the dean and vice president for alumni affairs and development as well as colleagues across the university and partner institutions— including within YNHH System – will be integral to the success of this role.The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of leadership experience in a complex organization (preferably in academic medicine and/or scientific research settings; strong managerial, strategic planning, and motivational skills; a track record of success growing fundraising programs and personally securing principal gifts; the desire and wherewithal to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships with all members of an operation across a university and a diverse body of donors and constituents; and the exceptional interpersonal skills required to effectively engage key leaders and other members of the university community in the fundraising process. Essential qualifications include the expertise and credibility to serve as a senior advisor to faculty and staff, as well as the ability to navigate a highly complex organization.
