Chair, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences University of Michigan Medical School | Ann Arbor, Michigan The University of Michigan Board of Regents has approved the appointment of Dr. Shahzad Mian, M.D., as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the F. Bruce Fralick Professor of Ophthalmology in the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS), and the director of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center effective April 1st, 2024.Dr. Mian joined the UMMS faculty in 2002 as a clinical lecturer in ophthalmology and visual sciences and was promoted to full professor with tenure in 2016. He served as the fellowship director for the department and then afterward directed the residency training program between 2004 and 2019. During his time as director the program became a top-ten ranked program nationally. Dr. Mian has previously served as interim chair and professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UMMS and has served the department as vice chair of clinical sciences and learning since 2019. Dr. Mian was also the ambulatory care clinical chief for the University of Michigan Medical Group.Dr. Mian has received several awards, including the Bergstrom Teaching Award in 2003 and 2012, the Anthony Adamis Award for Outstanding Research from the U-M Kellogg Eye Center in 2007, and the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2016. He directs the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Surgical Curriculum for Ophthalmology Residents and serves on the board of directors and as senior medical director of Eversight Eye Bank among other appointments. His research focuses on corneal transplantation techniques, eye banking and medical education.Dr. Mian earned his medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Wills Eye Hospital of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
